The Approach of Fire

Yapı
Parça düşük yoğunlukta açılır. Ritim önce yokken kuruluyor gibidir; giriş ardından çekilen ana motif, telli enstrümanların sürtündüğü uzun bir nefes hâlinde uzar. Bu parça post-metal deyiminin neden Agalloch için her zaman dar geldiğini gösterir: burada saldırı değil, bekleyiş vardır.
İmge: yangının sezgisi
Albümün açılışından beri büyüyen "akış" duygusu, burada görünür hâle gelmek üzeredir. Henüz alev değil, alevin gölgesidir — ve burada gölge sözcüğünün iki anlamı çakışır: hem alevin önce gelen karaltısı, hem de yıkımı kabullenemeyen iç ses. Bu konum, üçlemenin geri kalanını okumak için bir başlangıç koşuludur: yangını görmüyoruz, ama geleceğini biliyoruz; çünkü zaman tek yönlüdür ve hiçbir kalenin sonsuza dek dayanması beklenemez. Bunun fiziksel adı zamanın okudur; termodinamiğin ikinci yasası tarafından yönlendirilir. Akış entropinin kendisidir; gölge bu özdeşliği reddettiği için gerilim de buradan başlar.
Bölüm II’ye giden köprü
Bölüm I’in son saniyeleri, II’nin açılışındaki söze (yangının dile gelişine) doğru çok belirgin bir gerilim bırakır. Dinleyici hâlâ sessizliğin uzayışında dururken, yangının "The god of man is a failure" mısrasıyla kendini ilan edeceğini hisseder.

Structure
The piece opens at low intensity. Rhythm is constructed almost before we hear it; the central motif drifts in like a long breath against the strings. The track is the clearest illustration of why post-metal has always been too narrow a label for Agalloch: this is not attack — it is waiting.
The image: an intuition of fire
The sense of "flow" that has been growing since the album’s opening is about to become visible. Not yet flame; the shadow of flame — and here the word shadow rings twice: it is both the dimness before the fire, and the inner voice that cannot accept the destruction the fire brings. This is a starting condition for the rest of the trilogy: we do not see the fire, but we know it is coming, because time is one-way and no fortress is built to last forever. Physics calls this the arrow of time, set by the second law of thermodynamics. The flow is entropy; the shadow’s tension begins where it refuses this identity.
Bridge into Part II
The closing seconds of Part I leave a clear tension toward Part II’s opening lyric. We are still inside the stretched silence when we feel the fire is about to announce itself with "The god of man is a failure."
