Vinil bonusu
Scars of the Shattered Sky (Our Fortress Has Burned to the Ground) adlı yaklaşık 19 dakikalık enstrümantal parça, albümün vinil baskılarında bonus olarak yer alır. Kayıt 2003 tarihlidir; vinil sürümü 2 Mart 2007’de The End Records’un Infinite Vinyl Series serisinde çıkmıştır. Yapısal okuma
I bir yangın değil, yangının sezgisidir: e-bow ile uzatılan gitar dokuları, yavaşça yükselen gerilim, henüz söze ulaşmamış bir uyarı. Burada gölge daha sezdiği şeyle yüzleşmemiştir. II dile gelir; tek sözlü parça, açılış mısrası "The god of man is a failure" — gölgenin kale gibi koruduğu tanrı çöker. III şarkıyı söze değil dokuya geri verir; enstrümantal kapanış, "grain" başlığıyla hem grenin (doku) hem tahılın (mahsul) hem de albümün against the grain motifinin son yankısıdır. Albümün asıl önermesi de burada okunabilir: kül, akışa karşı duramaz; akışa karşı duran şeyin adı gölgeydi.

Three pieces, three phases of one movement: the shadow sensing the fire, the shadow collapsing into speech, the ash joining the flow. The final half-hour of the album should be read as a single composition.
The album in context
Ashes Against the Grain is the third studio album by the Portland band Agalloch, released by The End Records on August 8, 2006. Eight tracks, roughly an hour. The closing three tracks are built as a continuous arc:

The vinyl bonus
Scars of the Shattered Sky (Our Fortress Has Burned to the Ground), an instrumental piece of roughly nineteen minutes, appears as a bonus on all vinyl editions. It was recorded in 2003; the vinyl release came on March 2, 2007, on The End Records’ Infinite Vinyl Series. It can be read as the trilogy’s "ash" wing — what is left, long after the event.
Structural reading
I is not a fire but an intuition of fire: e-bow guitar textures, slowly rising tension, a warning that has not yet found speech. Here the shadow has not yet faced what it senses. II finds words; the trilogy’s only vocal piece opens with "The god of man is a failure" — the god the shadow had built as a fortress falls. III returns the song from text to texture; the instrumental close, titled "The Grain," echoes both grain (texture), grain (crop), and the album’s against the grain motif. Its real proposition can be read here: ash cannot stand against the grain; what stood against the grain was the shadow.
